Grade 6 Field Trip written by Jody D. and photographs by K. Stanford

Teamwork was the key to this wondrous field trip.  We climbed and interacted with others in our group.  We learned how to communicate without speaking, tried to fit into a tire, as well as walk on a centimeter tightrope.  We also learned how to help people and work successfully as a group.  As people passed me on the trails and waited for the big climbing experience, I saw smiles on their faces.  The people who were brave enough to go to the top were astonishing!  They did very well, and I was scared for them even when I was on flat ground!  The obstacles were difficult, but the kids made it.  Some may have climbed higher than others, but it didn’t matter as long as they tried.  We all had a spectacular time.  Even if it was not all fun, I hope that most liked it at some point and learned a lesson from it.  I can’t wait until we go on our next adventure!

R. Philbrick Was in Town!  by Jody D.

Rodman Philbrick, the famous author of The Young Man and the Sea and many other kids and adult books, came to McGee Middle School on Thursday, September 17, to talk to us about his books.  Many people listened to his scenarios and asked very interesting questions.  He spoke about how he managed to think of these stories and let us learn more about him.  The author is now 58, and he has written hundreds of books.  We were assigned to read a book by him over the summer and think of two questions to ask him if we met him up close.  We shared those ideas with each other in class, and many other ideas were generated.  Rodman’s wonderful personality lit up everyone’ face.  He taught us a great deal about himself and that we should follow our dreams even if we don’t think that we can reach them, such as getting on a professional basketball team!  The gentleman is a very humorous and happy man.  I think his happiness rubbed off on us, for many of the kids were smiling afterwards, not because they were happy to leave the auditorium, but because of the jolly man and his wonderful speech.  Not everyone shared their questions, but from the ones that were answered, we learned valuable lessons.  This was a moment to remember.
