For Coordinators of the Bus Project

by Michele Sorensen Bagwell

PREPARATION for ARRIVAL

In preparation for the C.A.R.E.-a-Van’s visit to your school please refer to the Coordinator’s Countdown from Robin Dauma  Robin coordinated the bus project for her school, Discovery Middle School, in Alabama last year. She has written a detailed and very practical suggestion guide to hosting the bus. This will be extremely helpful in your planning stages.

 A FEW NEW REMINDERS:

Please arrange for a local bus driver with a CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) to drive the bus from your school to the next hosting school.

You must maintain an insurance policy (a rider to your district’s policy) which insures your driver and the bus for collision incidents for the time period that the bus travels from your school to the next hosting school. A copy of this policy must be forwarded to Michele Sorensen Bagwell one week before the bus departs from your school. The bus is not allowed to move forward without the appropriate coverage.

There are three art educators who worked on the original bus project. Each artist educator has offered to visit your school for one to two days (depending on their schedules and your location) during your hosting two week period to assist you and your students with the project. Art educators can provide students with a history of the project and can assist your project coordinators in the initial painting stages of the bus.  If you would like an “Artist in Riding” to visit your school please call Mrs. Sorensen Bagwell to confirm a date.

Mrs. Sorensen Bagwell  would also be willing to present an overview of the project to your students and staff prior to your hosting dates. A slide show and I-movie are available that present a nice visualization of the project’s origin. Please call her if you are interested in this offering.

Please have your students, teachers and project coordinators write frequent journal entries (daily if possible) for our website. Reactions, responses, insights and personal/group thoughts are valuable assets to the site. Technology is a wonderful tool for keeping people updated and informed. Our website is an integral part of the bus project.

 PAINTING GUIDELINES AND RESTRICTIONS

The C.A.R.E.-a-Van website address on the front bumper of the bus is to remain on the bus.

DO NOT PAINT over the words Slade, Roosevelt and McGee Middle Schools at the top of the bus.

 DO NOT PAINT THE TIRES

DO NOT PAINT THE FRONT/BACK WINDOWS OR THE LIGHTS

DO NOT ALLOW STUDENTS TO PAINT THE ROOF OF THE BUS.

 FINANCIAL SUPPORT

We continue to seek financial support for the project. It is extremely helpful if your school can provide a fundraiser for the project or if students can write to local businesses seeking donations. Again, this is a non-profit project. Donations are tax deductible.
