Civil War Letter Project

Each category is detailed below:

1.  Describe your life as a Northerner or Southerner prior to the war. Using the perspective assigned, be sure to answer the following questions:
* What is it like in the North or South?
* Create an interesting job for yourself based on the region you represent.
* Where do you live?
*What are your reasons for joining the war?


2. What are the advantages of your side in the war? Use your graphic organizer that was created from Section 1 or use the links below:

3. You and your partner find out that you have both fought in the same battle. You and your partner must pick and research one of the following battles: 
*Bull Run
*Antietam
*Battle of Fredericksburg
*Battle of Chancellorsville
*Battle of Shiloh
*Battle of Vicksburg
*Battle of Gettysburg 

You must discuss the following:
*The date you fought in the battle.
*Where did the battle take place?
*How long did the battle last?
*Did your side win or lose?
*What happened during the battle?
*Did you see each other during the battle?
*What were some of your feelings during the battle



4.  Who is your leader? Discuss the following:
*Give a brief biography of your leader.
*What are some of your leader's qualifications?
*Is he a good leader? How do you know?



5.  What are your living conditions like? Discuss the following:
*What is camp life like?
*Have you been wounded? Are you in a hospital?
*How's the food?
*What do you do for entertainment between battles?



6.  Personal Opinion Letter: Imagine that you have been in this war for more than one year now. Explain your feelings to your friend about the war:
*Do you agree or disagree about the cause of the battle or war you are fighting?
*If you were given a choice to fight on a different side, would you change sides? If so, why? Be sure to include 4 specific facts to support your choice.



7.  What was the Emancipation Proclamation? Describe your feelings about the Emancipation Proclamation based on your point of view. Be sure to include three specific facts to support your feelings.



8.  Lee's Surrender at Appomattox Courthouse
*When did General Lee surrender?
*List at least three details of the surrender. 
*Describe your feelings about Lee's surrender and the Union winning the war.



9.  Personal Opinion Letter: The war has come to an end. Although it is over, the nation is still separated and the land and people completely devastated. You are put in charge of creating a nation that can live peacefully as "one united nation".
*Design a plan for bringing the United States back together. Keep in mind that the South still feels the same now as before the war (meaning that they still very much value the "peculiar institution".
*How should the South rejoin the North and become "one" again? 
*What kinds of compromises should each side make in order for this to happen? 
*Your plan should list at least three specific steps that will begin to bring us back together.
