GRADE 8 WASHINGTON D.C. TRIP
April 15, 16, 17, 18, 2008

Our Washington D.C. field trip is designed to enhance students’ knowledge of U.S. History and American government.  During the course of the school year, they will learn about the political system of the United States , major historical figures and events, democratic values, and the U.S. Constitution.  This trip offers our students an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the rich heritage of our country.  They will view, firsthand, the symbols, monuments and buildings that establish us as the greatest nation in the world.

Below you will find two (2) copies of the Contract/Permission Slip.  Please sign one copy and return it to your child’s math teacher. Please keep the second copy for your records.  Even if your child will not be attending the field trip, we need you to note this on the permission slip, sign, and return it to your child’s math teacher.

The Student Medical Information form is necessary in case of an emergency while in DC.  This form must be notarized.  For your convenience, Charlene Warnke, a notary, is available from 8 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the main office.  The Medication Form is to notify us of any prescription or over the counter drug your child may need during this field trip.

Linked is a timeline of Important Dates to remember.  This will keep you informed of the permission slips, contracts, and payment deadlines.

The first deposit of $150.00 is due October 9th.  Please make checks or money orders payable to McGee Middle School .  If you are in need of financial assistance, please direct all calls to Jim Sachs, Dean of Students, ext. 555 or Maria Kelly, 8th grade school counselor, ext. 513.

If you have any questions at all concerning the DC field trip, please direct them to our trip coordinators, Linda Germain, ext. 152 and/or Suzie McCabe, ext. 121.

Sincerely,

Brian Benigni

Principal

LUGGAGE: Each student is allowed 1 MEDIUM-SIZED suitcase or duffle bag. Parents should check the contents of the suitcase on the day of the trip.  Upon arrival, students should put this suitcase on the sidewalk in front of the building next to the cone marked with their Bus Number. This luggage will not be available until our arrival at the hotel.

BACKPACK: Pack a breakfast snack, a bag lunch, labeled disposable camera(s), a jacket/sweatshirt, pens/pencils and other items that need to be accessible on the bus in a backpack, which can be placed on the luggage rack in the bus.

CLOTHING: McGee dress code is expected on all school trips. Clothing that is torn, has holes or inappropriate lettering may not be worn. Tank tops, halter-tops, or short skirts are not permitted. Please wear comfortable shoes and sneakers; breaking in a new pair of shoes or sneakers is not recommended. All other costs are included in the price of the trip. Please use your discretion when deciding how much spending money should be brought on the trip.

CAMERAS: Disposable cameras are an excellent choice.  Bring several since the cost to purchase one in D.C. is quite high. Print your name on each camera.

TELEPHONES: Students will not be allowed to use the hotel phones in their rooms or the public phone in the hotel lobby.  Students will call home from their cell phones either early in the morning before leaving the hotel or in the evening as soon as they arrive back at the hotel. Cell phone use is not permitted in museums, while touring, on the bus, or with step-on-guides. Students are to use cell phones only as a means to contact parents or guardians during designated times. Please review responsible use of a cell phone with your child as well as the dangers associated with improper usage. Students who do not bring a cell phone will have an opportunity to call home daily from a public phone.

SAFETY:  Students are never permitted to wander off alone.  There is one assigned adult chaperone for every 8 to 12 students. Staff will be able to communicate with each other at all times with hand-held FCC radios or cellular phones.  Students will be able to reach all chaperones if they accidentally become separated from their group.

HOTEL REGULATIONS: All students must comply with the rules and regulations set by hotel management. Security guards will be on duty on each floor from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. to secure the safety of our students and staff.  Students are not allowed to leave their rooms for any reason (emergencies excluded).

MISCELLANEOUS:  Electronic games, cards, books, or personal CD players and hand held music devices may be used on the bus, but not while we are touring with our step-on guides, visiting the museums and other attractions, or dining. Radios with external speakers and DVD players are not permitted.
